Gateway Anti-VirusThis is the primary defense mechanism against viruses. Most viruses originate from the Internet in many forms. Using CIPAFilter’s built-in proxy system, any traffic coming from the Internet is automatically sanitized before entry into your network is granted. By using CIPAFilter as a mail relay (or Anti-Spam), CIPAFilter will process the SMTP traffic and provide enhanced e-mail anti-virus, including stopping phishing e-mails and more – all automatically before the e-mail reaches your mail server. Desktop/Laptop Anti-Virus Software
A software client compatible with most Windows computers, and even a freely available MAC OS10+ client is available and bundled with the CIPAFilter’s anti-virus solution. This client can be deployed to all workstations in most all Windows and Novell environments and provides added protection against external media. The client software updates regularly using the CIPAFilter unit for signature file and engine updates.
Gateway Virus Protection Engine
The reason CIPAFilter is so effective at catching viruses, is due to a proprietary proxy-based engine that allows CIPAFilter to process and scan all web-traffic, and sanitize any pages and downloads automatically before they reach the network. Signature files updates are checked for every hour, and engine updates are deployed when available, via CIPAFilter’s main database servers.
CIPAFilter functions as a transparent proxy, or manual proxy. In either mode, as long as the CIPAFilter is acting as a proxy for your web traffic, the virus protection is automatically enabled. The anti-virus log on the CIPAFilter will show all viruses detected and removed.
Software Client – CIPAAvThe software client is a much more simplified anti-virus engine freely available as part of the complete virus protection solution – designed to keep viruses from executing and protecting the local computers. The client can be deployed using several common methods. This client is based on the popular “clamav” open-source engine, and has the ability to identify viruses prior to the malware being defined in a signature-file, making it less vulnerable to new viruses.
Download/Spy-Ware BlockingThe download blocking, a separate feature of CIPAFilter, provides added protection against unwanted downloads, software, and potential spy-ware applications. It also helps stop those files and binaries that do not detect as viruses but could still be potentially harmful or unwanted.
CIPAFilter is able to detect binary and executable code, file extensions and compressed files and blocks these all automatically, without any user input. The file is downloaded as a 0-byte file, meaning there will be an icon on the user’s desktop showing the download, but in reality there is nothing there.
This feature is easily enabled, and managed by the white-list, user group using server authentication with the CIPAFilter, and also by IP address for bypassing by user/IP/web-site.
A typical implementation would be to allow executable downloads only from select web-sites for your students, while allowing staff members and teachers more freedom.
